RECOMMENDED: 2562 - Aquatic Family Affair/This Is Hardcore [When In Doubt]

Over the last two or three years there really hasn’t been someone whose command and deployment of rhythm has so completely enthralled me as much as the man behind 2562, Dave Huismans. His music, whether under the aforementioned numerical postcode guise or his more heavy handed house orientated moniker, A Made Up Sound, always brings a pang of excitement and that palpable thump to any soundsystem its played on. Whilst other producers might choose to experiment more with the lower frequencies, relying on drawn out 808 kicks or tremulant low end to work the soundsystem, Huismans just further hones his craft, working overtime on his drum lines. Bringing the bump and snap like no one else, his tracks under either name are instantly recognisable.

‘Aquatic Family Affair’ and ‘This Is Hardcore’ are the first beats under the 2562 moniker to surface since Huismans’ last album under the name, 2009’s Unbalance – if you overlook his ‘The Wind Up’ track on Modeselektor’s Modeselektion Vol 1., which we are doing here to create some kind of elemental form of drama. They’re also the first 2562 material to not be housed on Pinch’s influential Tectonic imprint, with Huismans’ instead birthing a brand new label subjectively called When In Doubt, for the release of this single – 300 ltd edition blue vinyl 10”s. It's reportedly a prelude to a brand new 2562 album coming later this year.

‘Aquatic Family Affair’ should really be trademarked; it’s slamming kick drum, swung snares and chord interplay is classic 2562: his synths sirening up and out of earshot in the drum heavy breakdowns before he lets his hi hats fly and the beat rolls out again. His measurement and attention to the dancefloor make the rhythm omnipresent, its broken shuffle is destined to push your shoulders out at regular integers as the dry top on the kick drum works your ears perfectly, its base hitting you roughly in the chest. ‘This Is Hardcore’ is an ultimately darker beast, built on a brooding kick drum/bass stab pattern. Loop sampling keys and vinyl atmos in a similar manner to the way Addison Groove does on tracks like ‘It’s Got Me,’ gives it that eerie, anxious edge which suits the power and mannerism of the drum line to a tee. Huismans’ balances out the weight of the bass parts with little percussive flourishes and it’s those shakers and fills that keep popping out on repeat listens.

Two heavyweight cuts that suggest 2562’s prevalence, when the wider internet was loving off more on A Made Up Sound, was never in doubt.

We're hyper aware of the amount of mixes that flood your eyes every time you look at the internet (I mean sheeeeeeeeeeit, we do it too) and in an attempt to distance ourselves from the tide a little, we quashed a lot of our own gumpf. But sometimes, there's an artist that does something special that's truly worth shouting about.

Dutch producer 2562 made a massive impact on us with his debut album for Pinch's Tectonic imprint, 'Aerial' and his follow up 'Unbalance' topped our 2009 retrospective chart with its characteristic colourful trajectories. Since then Dave Huismans has released countless gems under his A Made Up Sound guise, constantly bringing his hard edged, dancefloor punch in new and beasting ways.

Ahead of an appearance at fabric this very evening, he put together a mix for American site URB.com (what's good Mitch?) and it's simply total class. Anyone who's seen him play out can testify to his mechanistic poly-rhythm matching, and its here in full effect alongside a whole bunch of unreleased heat from SR family like FaltyDL, Blawan, Pinch and West Norwood Cassette Library.

DOWNLOAD: Scientist Meets LoDubs @ Version

What comes as an incredibly timely aside to Tectonic’s Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space project, also ties in gloriously with our movements this coming week. For as well as working with Tectonic boss Pinch, re-versioning tracks from today’s elite producers like Shackleton, Loefah, Guido, Mala and more, it seems Scientist has been hard at work, re-wiring sounds live, creating his own dub versions of the productions he displays.

He’s doing it across the UK throughout November, starting this Thursday at fabric in London, he’ll be touring the country appearing in Glasgow and Brighton. Travelling with Pinch, Mala, Loefah and The Upsetters, who formed the nucleus of The Wailers - famed for their work with Bob Marley, he’ll be remixing the band live, stamping his own technologically savvy swagger across the music they create.

A pearly co-incidence then that Jon from the LoDubs label got in touch, touting a recording of a show he did in his native Portland at his Version club night with Scientist. What follows, in addition to the recording itself, is his explanation of the project:

“We’ve left the recording quite raw on purpose to both preserve the live nature of the recording and to make it just a taste. Many of these tunes will be released as part of our upcoming 12" collaborations with Scientist.”

“As for the story on out involvement with Hopeton [Brown aka Scientist], I received a Myspace message from him out of the blue, in which he expressed his appreciation of the LoDubs sound, in particular the work of 6blocc, and how he would like to collaborate with us in order to bring out our sounds ‘hidden third dimension.’ Of course, we jumped on that, and decided that the best way to go would be for us to do a live show to get it all moving. What followed three weeks later is this recording.”

“The trickiest part, in the interim, was figuring out just HOW to make it happen. Hopeton had a pretty specific set of needs for the equipment, and in addition it became clear that in order for him to be able to manipulate the material correctly, we would need to create multi track feeds of many of the tracks from the back catalogue in order to feed them live to him. We enlisted the assistance of Alter Echo, who is a remarkable dub musician in his own right, and has collaborated in a similar capacity with Mad Professor, DJ Spooky, Dr Israel, and many others. The final link in the chain was Jagga, who is the house vocalist for our two monthlies, VARIOUS and VERSION. The live dubbing of the Scientist over these elements are really the thing that ties it all together.”

RECOMMENDED: A Made Up Sound - Alarm/Crisis [AMUS]/Basic Soul Unit Remixes [Creme Organization]

As much as his output as 2562 is exciting and intriguing in equal measure, Dave Huismans’ house and techno inspired music as A Made Up Sound manages to retain a sheer visceral thrill that just pips his other material to the post. Last year’s incredible 'Rework'/'Closer' EP is still on heavy rotation round these parts, the lead track’s lurching parabolic motion somehow even more exciting now than when it first emerged, and its follow up 'Sun Touch showcased a suitably deeper and more experimental bent. This month sees two new releases from the man like AMUS: a new pair of original tracks for his own label, and a pair of razor sharp remixes of Basic Soul Unit’s ‘Jack’d Freq’.

Huismans’ take on Basic Soul Unit is a little reminiscent of the awkward, peak-time power of his DJ sets; his ‘Puur Natuur’ remix rides off a gloriously bizarre, broken beat which maintains a relentless momentum despite its minimalist structure. Over the top he strafes the track with jagged barbs of synth, culminating in a slow peak and gradual dissociation. The ‘Acid Bonus’ mix on the flip fills in the gaps, pushing the A-side’s more considered shapes into overdriven techno territory. ‘Acid Bonus’ is about as terrifyingly apt a description as you could get as well, the track’s central motif a bracing wall of abrasive squiggle that takes the prettier melody of ‘Love In Outer Space’ and feeds it through a retro-futuristic blender.

His latest for his own AMUS label, the 'Alarm'/'Crisis' 12”, acts as a real contrast to the less straightforward ‘Jack’d Freq’ remixes: both tracks are among the most direct he’s put out. ‘Alarm’ retains their acid-tinted feel, but sets it over a heavy percussive jack, but ‘Crisis’ is the real gem here. It’s probably the thickest and most heady groove his A Made Up Sound music has ever managed to lock into, powered by steamroller bottom-end and his characteristic offbeat hi-hat figures. The overall result is sheer, brainmelting peak-time techno, but delivered in Huismans’ distinctive style it’s somehow both deliciously subtle and utterly brainless at once. Once again, he’s less leading the pack than forming a kind of vanguard, entering unknown and exciting territory long before anyone else even dares to follow.

Dutch producer 2562 is someone you should never let out of earshot for a minute - although once you have done just that, when he returns with something like this its a sheer delight... With his two long playing albums under the numerical moniker (the most recent of which, Unbalance, stole the top spot in our 2009 Retrospective) and his other work as A Made Up Sound, Dave Huismans, is steadily creating a superb back catalogue and his prowess behind the platters is just as press worthy; with his steadfast and sturdy beat matching and impeccably bumpy selection always standing proud.

PRE-ORDER: Pursuit Grooves - Foxtrot Mannerisms [Tectonic]

In past interviews, Tectonic head honcho Pinch has spoken about there being a well-defined Tectonic ‘sound’ – records that fit its ethos, and those that don’t. The fact that the label has always focused on the deeper, more traditionally ‘dubstep’ end of the bass spectrum might have suggested that its particular sound was locked into that trajectory; so it’s great, if a little surprising, to see his A&R skills branching out with Pursuit GroovesFox Trot Mannerisms taking up the mantra as Tectonic’s first defiantly non-dubstep release, with the New Yorker weaving together a set of curious and beguiling electronic soul hybrids.

There’s still a certain something shared with the rest of the label’s output though. Call it intention, but perhaps what Vanese Smith’s music has in common with Pinch, Peverelist and the rest of the Tectonic roster is a sense of purpose, and an unwillingness to rush in order to reach its destination. As a result this mini-album’s most immediate song, opener ‘Pressure’, is also one of its most languid with Smith’s half-sung, half-whispered chatter drifting in space above lounge pianos and sparing hip-hop grooves. ‘Mister Softee’ is as much a piece of modern jazz as anything else, its spaced-out keys recalling the wide-open vistas of Bitches Brew, and the delicately pieced together haze of ‘Whisper’ is almost delirious in its feverish hyperreality. Hers is undeniably soul music though – released on the same day as the second of Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah albums, it’s possible to align the two’s common ancestry and shared intent.

The other aspect Fox Trot Mannerisms shares with its label’s UK counterparts is a sense of the urbane. Although ‘Tweezers’ could almost be described as pastoral, with its fuzz of distant clicks akin to the chirps of nighttime crickets, Pursuit Grooves’ music has a strong affinity with city life. It’s a balmy summer evening’s breeze through suburban streets, or a twilight headphone stroll through a dodgy area of town where the music acts as a barrier to the real world – or, in the case of the dubstep-tinted ‘Start Something’, vividly enhancing the surrounding environment.

PRE-ORDER: Pinch Ft. Yolanda – Get Up [Tectonic]

It’s pretty safe to say that ‘Get Up’ is a dubstep classic. The vocal version with sometime Massive Attack collaborator Yolanda first featured on the CD release of Pinch’s debut album ‘Underwater Dancehall,’ but it never reached vinyl much to the disappointment of many. But proving that good things do come to those who wait, two years later the world gets a vinyl release with the original vocal alongside a dub version as well as a splattering of quality remixes from: RSD, Guido, Jack Sparrow and LV.

The original vocal and dub by Pinch uses smooth and rolling drum patterns, pulsing bass and dancehall dub accents to play off the soulful vocals that makes it sound as fresh today as it was 2 years ago, with the timeless melancholy of the house diva vocals, here updated for the dubstep generation, shift along seamlessly with the emotive strings.

The remixes are on point too though the highlight of the bunch has to be from Bristol legend RSD. Rob Smith, one half of the production duo Smith & Mighty, brings his own wonderfully deep and warm soundsystem shaking bass lines, piano flourishes and a beat that simply makes you want to wiggle. Guido also provides a brilliant refix that somehow echoes house music’s hay-day and the new slinky, soul-infused instrumental funk of Bristol dubstep. The subtle boom-bap drums build a smooth groove before deep house chords take over and play off the vocals to make what sounds like a long lost 90s house hit that’s been left to mutate in Dr. Dre’s refrigerator.

Jack Sparrow takes his version deep into dubstep territory, designing it for big dark rooms with weighty systems, lacing it with huge bass pulses and a half-stepping beat that still has a bump to it. LV is the one that comes from a very different angle; his dub heavy disco version has plenty of rootsy vibes and the slinkiest smooth bass around and as always with LV productions, it grows on you in a subtle fashion.

PRE-ORDER: Kryptic Minds – 768/Pinch & Moving Ninja – False Flags (Kryptic Minds Remix) [Tectonic]

Pinch is really brining the darkness with his label’s most recent releases and this 12” seems to be no exception, with the production duo Kryptic Minds making their Tectonic debut. After the very well received 12” and their album, ‘One Of Us,’ for Loefah’s Swamp 81 label the former drum & bass producers are really making a name for themselves with their apocalyptic half step material.

The A-Side comes in the form of ‘768’ a new and original track and just like their other dubstep material it has that dark and spacious half stepping bass mediation vibe going on. These guys really know how to make the low end subs sing and it really shows here; you get the full bass spectrum from subterranean rumbles to a little added mid range growl, you know, using it occasionally to keep things that little bit evil and the string sections really give the track a forbidden, almost emotional pull.

On the flip Kryptic Minds show us their take on Pinch & Moving Ninja’s deeply disturbing ‘False Flag,' which first featured on the fantastic ‘Tectonic Plates Vol.2’ compilation earlier this year. This remix takes that foreboding pent up atmosphere and makes it even more cinematic as the low end bubbles and drives the track down into the underworld. The percussive elements on show are something else too, as they prove their 10 year production pedigree showing that they really know how to get a sound down; the drums are warm, phat and woody. It’s a killer re-interpretation of an already killer track.

PRE-ORDER: Relocate – Origins/Dot Dot Dash (Buraka Som Sistema Remix) [Iberian Records]

The third plate from Lisbon and Barcelona-based Iberian Records (so an appropriate label name then) is part two of Relocate’s cheekily named ‘Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers’ EP. The first part emerged earlier in the year, at around the same time as he released a gorgeous house-infused dubstep remix of Kontext’s ‘Plumes’ on Immerse.

Continuing where the first plate left off, lead track ‘Origins’ is dusky and understated, a nocturnal excursion thorough that well-tread middle ground between dubstep and techno with its metronomic kicks and delicately bristling snare patterns. There’s a certain Bristolian element buried in its monochrome synth stabs and echo-drenched voices – this brittle, metallic quality is occasionally reminiscent of Appleblim’s early material for Skull Disco, and wouldn’t sound out of place on Tectonic. Still, its very subtlety marks it out: less a disco-wrecker than a slow-building, hypnotic roller, the ever-present rumble of sub bass pressure is as warm and cocooning as it is propulsive.

By way of contrast, then, the Buraka Som Sistema remix of ‘Dot Dot Dash’ on the flip is a beast: the Lisbon collective take the original’s four-to-the-floor pulse and rebuild the groove over the top entirely, subverting the techno elements with muscular, gritty aggression. Its repeated melodic motif and sudden bursts of feedback are all that remain, but are dragged along by a sinewy, elastic bassline that stretches almost to breaking point before snapping back for the drop. It’s minimalist in structure but deadly in its execution, limb-twitching kuduro percussion married to a grinding low-end that through a big system is liable to cause the gut equivalent of tinnitus.

Despite the wildly different nature of the two tracks here, it is to Buraka’s credit that they preserve Relocate’s tonal palette even as they up the energy levels. It exposes a successful shared goal – to bring a little European twilight to the dance.

NEWS: 2562 - Unbalance [Tectonic]

News posts are particularly rare round these parts and in fact are usually reserved for posts that we really want to shout about but can't ever fit into any of our existing categories... Anyway, I digress... for me its a hearty and emphatic pleasure to be able to announce details of Dave Huismans aka 2562's sophomore album, 'Unbalance.'

The forthcoming follow up to the 2562 debut 'Aerial,' a full length stark and oft cold exploration of greyscale dubtechno through stark monochrome synth washes and torrential drums, finds Huisman's exploring his production with a touch more colour, fleshing out his impeccably stumbled drum patter with bold strokes of synthesizer warmth and a flair for higer pitched melody. The recently released 'Love In Outer Space', is included and is definitely indicative of Husiman's matured approach to the dancefloor.

Possibly the most anticipated album release of 2009, I can tell you now, 'Unbalance' will NOT by any strength of the imagination dissapoint.

PRE-ORDER: Cyrus – Space Cadet/Junk Yard [Tectonic]

In a world where dubstep is an ever evolving beast spawning and mutating into anything from full on rave anthems to strange hybrids of hip-hop people like Cyrus are keeping the original dark, dirty and deep vibes going and pushing it into new territories. After releasing the first artist album on Tectonic, this is his first single on the label since; pushing a similar concoction of bass weight and drum thumps as Distance, the man who picked Cyrus for Mary Anne Hobbs hallowed Dubstep Warz showcase sequel, Generation Bass earlier this year.

‘Space Cadet,’ which in fact got aired on Generation Bass as a dubplate, is a dubbed out almost industrial sounding number with, as the name suggests, a proper spaced out sound. You can almost hear the afterburners of a shuttle deep in space morphing into reverberating bass. There is a half step vibe going on here but the heavy kick plays off the high hats, crackles and snare to create a swung groove with an almost jazz swagger. The breakdown is so epic it drops out into silence where you feel like you’re in a vacuum before a chest-pummelling bass drops back in.

‘Junk Yard’ on the flip has a more driving sound to it with double kicks and a gnarly deep down and dirty alien bass line that’s coupled with that huge tell tale Cyrus sub. There is a dark bounce that you’ll surely connect with if you’re feeling anyone from Mala to Goth Trad. There’s a raw, physical feeling to this track and you can just tell it’s been made to test the big rigs.

PRE-ORDER: Jack Sparrow – The Chase/Fullest [Tectonic]

Leeds producer and DJ, Jack Sparrow, has got a fair few releases under his belt for the likes of Senseless, Contagious and ‘Earwax labels but now, in July 2009, he is set to drop his first 12” for Tectonic. These two tracks are definitely more akin to the defined aesthetic of Tectonic material than Sparrow’s previous work; with that deep, techy spacious sound, the label is known for and does so well, proving very prominent across the release.

‘The Chase’ opens the 12” in deep dark style with rolling tribal drums and pummelling sub bass, with dubbed out samples chirping “Hard…core” adding to the layers of dark space. The drums and cleverly pressurised percussion really propel this one, much in the same way the overwhelming sense of dread that the shadowy sounds bring does. It’s an excellent example of dark dubstep given a constant kick drum technoid twist.

‘Fullest,’ which sees Sparrow joined by fellow Yorkshire producer Biggins, is a slightly more soulful affair with midnight soul stabs, cruising over that classic junglist sounding surge bass and skipping drum patterns that make perfect use of a singular conga hit. That trademark Tectonic hyper rolling, techno experimentation is omnipresent again, although Sparrow and Biggins fuse the drums with that deep mediation feel that makes you want to close your senses and simply drift along with the momentum of the track.
