READ/DOWNLOAD: SRQ015: Hypno [PTN/Ramp]

This edition of the Sonic Router column for respected web portal theQuietus is live now. Focused entirely on the work of Icelandic producer Hypno it comes equipped with the 55th Sonic Router mix.
"That playful aspect in Hypno's music is obvious as soon as you listen out for it. What may sound like micro programmed percussion lines and over studied drum programming is the sound of a producer completely immersing himself in the 'fun' aspect of making rhythm. There's seldom been something so endlessly satisfying as writing a groove that can drive, thump and swing all at the same time; and in places, on tracks like the aforementioned 'Over The Top' and 'Telescopes', it's hard not to grin as the drum hits bumble over themselves repeatedly." - Oli Marlow

INTERVIEW: The Summer of Shortstuff

*Please note: the following conversation happened on AIM.*

Shortstuff: Yo. The first part of the EP is out on August 2nd. You got the files right?

Sonic Router: Aye. You wanna do a pre time interview? Get the word out?

Yeah man. Sure

Cool… now?

Yeah man.

Cool... So where have you been? Working hard?

I've been concentrating on finishing this EP, doing lots of remixes, working on the label, and playing out and about…

So what’s the deal with this new, Summer of Shortstuff EP?

I think it captures a real progression in my stuff from about this time last year to when I finished the last track, in early 2010. I wrote the A side for my Mary Anne Hobbs guest mix, and the rest follow on chronologically from there. All the project files are dated, so I can tell you that ‘Swine Time’ was written on the 11th of October 2009, when I was laid up in bed, suffering from swine flu.

It's also a bit less frenzied than my first Ramp release, and some of my other singles

Do you think that’s a good thing? I’m all about the Shortstuff frenzy…

Well…The frenzy is still there. It's all still quite twitchy and uneasy, but most of the tracks that made it on there were made very quickly, out of an initial idea or vibe, without too much time being spent overcomplicating them for the sake of it. ‘Galaxy’ for example is made largely from the same record, drums and all. I sat down and wrote the whole arrangement in one session, with each bar triggering the next.

There are heaps of tracks that didn't make the cut that might be more polished and typical of the ‘zaney’ style you hear on some of my other stuff, but I'm happy that the ones which survived each capture a moment in my head, without too much thought for a style that people might expect from me.

So the title ‘The Summer of Shortstuff’ does that refer to the staggered release schedule?

No it does not. It's a Seinfeld reference

OK.

Basically... There is a Seinfeld episode called ‘The Summer Of George,’ where George receives a load of severance pay from his old job and vows to do something big with his the time off...

In reality, he ends up sitting around doing nothing. This speaks to me on so many levels, because I, like George, am a deeply lazy individual, hampered by my own neurosis; who overthinks things and drives himself to distraction in the process. So, given that it took me 12 months to come up with 7 tracks that I was happy to put my name to, coupled with the summer release, Summer Of Shortstuff seemed perfect.

It's definitely NOT stating that this summer is all about me. The opposite in fact

But you are you releasing it in several parts?

Yes. It is coming out on three 10"s throughout August. August 2nd, 15th and 30th. Roughly… The 3rd record will coincide with a digital release where you can grab the digital bonus track

So you will be omnipresent throughout the main summer month though…? Ha.

Yes I will. Hovering around like a bad smell.

Indeed. So… more gigs etc?

Yep. I'm playing Tomorrowland festival, Boom festival, a Field day afterparty, shows in Hamburg, Barcelona, Greece, Bristol and a heap of other stuff

Wowzer. Back in the game.

I was never out of the game. Just off AIM.

Who did the artwork?

One sec. Getting his website [goes idle]. It's a Japanese guy by the name of... OK I'll get that. Tom's getting his address for me. Next question?

He's wicked though…

Yeah he did my first Ramp single too. The ‘A Rustling’ single was sick, but he does all this stuff with actual paints, that was what first attracted us to him, and he really came up with goods. It looks like the record sounds. Better in fact.

All the Ramp stuff has nice art.

Yeah, Tom takes a lot of care with that side of things. I wish it sounded like his art looked...

So is anything lined up after these 3 x 10"s

After this, I have some remixes, including one Brackles and I did of Deadboy's 'If U Want Me' and my remix of 'On A Mission' by Hem, which was featured on Oneman's Rinse CD. Then, to celebrate the 5th Blunted Robots single, we have a tune Brackles and I did with an MC from Nottingham called Terrible Shock. Other than that, I'm working on lots of new stuff, vaguely aiming at a larger project, but trying not to think too much about it. I work much better if I don't think too much.

Cool! And finally… Damage or Take That?

Going to have to remind myself of Damage…

And yes, before you ask, this has already been discussed today…

Oh.

It's gotta be Damage…

Yeah. They had an edge. Somewhere in all that polish, there was an edge…

Allow the Eric Clapton cover though…

Yeah… ruin the first song I ever learnt to play the guitar solo of why don’t you…

LOLOL.

INTERVIEW: Shortstuff [Berkane Sol/Ramp/Pollen]

Shortstuff was one of the first people we spoke to about crafting an exclusive mix for us. I believe the first time we threw the idea around was back in mid February when we’d just launched, and he’s been teasing us with proposed tracklistings ever since. A close compatriot of Brackles, he’s been steadily crafting beats for labels like Pollen and Berkane Sol and he’s now lining up physical releases on some of our favourite labels.

It’s looking like ’09 will be a big year for the man himself so with that in mind we threw a few questions his way for your visual digestion.

Sonic Router: Can you provide those who may not know you with a bit of background info?

Shortstuff: I’m a producer/DJ from Hertfordshire. My first release was a 12” on Berkane Sol that I shared with Brackles. I like real ale, children’s TV shows from the early ‘90s and watching Seinfeld.

Outside of music who are you? What do you do on the daily?

I’m a journalist.

How did you get into recording music?

I’ve always played music. I used to play guitar in bands and would always be recording demos and stuff into a little 4 track I had. Then when I went to Uni, I met Brackles. He had a copy of Fruity Loops and we started making stuff on that.

What’s your production set up like?

Dusty. I use Nuendo and lots of VSTs – Battery and Massive especially – I also sample a lot.

What are some of your influences on your sound? How would you describe your music? Can you name check 3 artists who influence your production?

I draw influences from all over the place – my tastes are pretty broad. Today I’ve been listening to Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band – I wish I had a name like that. If I had to describe my music, I’d probably say its derivative nonsense a child could make.

Three artists who have had an influence on my production are:

Dilla – his loops do something quite weird to me. I don’t think there’s anyone out there to match the knack he had for picking and crafting samples.

Zinc – I’ve always loved what he does with his music and his label.

Todd Edwards – His ‘he died on a cross’ vocals and mincey riffs used to put me off. But through the years my resolve weakened and now tunes like ‘Signs’ and his ‘Zoot Woman’ remix seem to have become a part of my musical being.

Why the name Shortstuff? Small man complex perhaps... Just how tall are you?

I chose that name years ago because, although I’m not an actual midget, I’m not tall. I wish I had chosen more wisely.

I know you are close with Brackles. How did you meet?

He lived opposite me in halls at Uni in Notts. We’ve been close ever since. A lot of his tunes are actually written especially for me, it’s the only way he can express those feelings.

Do you share a similar kind of musical vision? When you make music together how does it work? What do you like about working together?

Yeah, I think we do. We both like stuff with energy that can also hold your attention out of a club setting. There are similarities in the things we write individually, but when we make tunes together you get a kind of odd combination of the two, plus the older we get the sillier our stuff becomes. We’ll just get drunk and muck about and if something sounds crap we’ll let each other know.

Do you think the Notts scene was/is a big influence on your output?

Well, neither of us has lived in Notts for some time. ‘Broken Harp’ was the last thing we wrote up there, and for me the tune really captures that time. I love Nottingham though and people like Geiom, Spam Chop and the Futureproof crew have undoubtedly played a big part in shaping my output – I reckon Rob would say the same.

Your Broken Harp 12” is out now on Pollen along with your Berkane Sol release... What else have you got coming up worth shouting about?

I’ve got a 12” coming on Ramp in the next couple of months. Then there’s a 12” on Wigflex that I’m really hyped about. I have a three-track 12” coming out on Formant really soon and then a tune Brackles and me made called ‘Sutorito Faita’ is coming on Planet Mu with his ‘LHC’ tune on the A side.

Further in the future I’ve got stuff coming on secret projects that may or may not have anything to do with Ramp, remixes for a few people, collaborations with Hyetal and Geiom and then mine and Brackles’ new label. I’m not going to say too much until everything is in place, but both me and Rob are hyped about it. Look out for stuff from our two favourite new producers of the moment: Martin Kemp and Mickey Pearce. They’re going to be huge.

You’re pushing dubstep in a more extravagant mode incorporating more soca rhythms on your forthcoming Ramp release. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the new directions the scene is taking? Any tips for producers we should watching out for?

I love all new directions. Dubstep is where a lot of us came from and it’s great to have such an enormous community at the core of what we’re all doing, but I feel far more inspired by the music the scene has spawned these days. So long as people are prepared to evolve and welcome new ideas there’s nothing to feel overwhelmed about.

My favourite producers at the moment are Martin Kemp, Mickey Pearce, FaltyDL, Greena, Untold and Hyetal. Also, Spam Chop played me a load of new stuff from the Wigflex posse the other day and it was sick – look out for Hizatron and Metaphi in particular.

Any words of wisdom for the interweb?

I’m not wise.

PRE-ORDER: Computer Jay - Distance/Epiphany [Ramp]

From the first note of the instantly recognisable synthesizer waverings on ‘Distance’ its impossible not to mesmerised. This track is a bonafide smash; its got the intro that will draw everyone's disco pistols and its got that incessant beat to vibe to as the snares hit on the beats you expect the kick drum to. The bass is measured and strong to work the sternum, wobbling succinctly without ever pulling focus from the lead synthesizer's evolutions into hammer horror.

‘Epiphany’ sounds a bit more like Computer Jay is solely using ancient Atari prefixes to communicate with the outside world as his bit crushed keyboards traverse octaves and the drums turn themselves into a rolling gallop. On both tracks it’s the way the drums are used that really stands out. Whether its confusing convention on the A side or turning the idea of a straight beat on its head with a succession of high pressure kick drums on ‘Epiphany’ Jay seems to absolutely nail it.

Essential.
