You know One Handed Music are all over this digital shit as well as their intricately birthed, uber limited vinyl runs, so much so that we've posted previously on Fulgeance and, more than likely, Paul White's giveaways via the new medium of the moment, Bandcamp, before.

Well, today marks Paul White's 'The Punch Drummer EP' with a free giveaway of the title track. If you slept on his 'Strange Of Dreams Of Paul White' album, you should definitely correct yourself asap. Call in sick, head to your nearest CD outlet and hand over your wonga. Its a beautifully tasty swamp like stew of soundtrack snippets, cleverly sourced samples and beats that will bang your stereo just as hard as if you took to it with a lump hammer after your girlfriend of many years finally revealed to you she's been "accomodating" the entire local rugby team after hours at the annual end of season presentation party.

INTERVIEW: Brackles [Applepips/Planet Mu]

Rob Kemp, a superlative DJ and producer who goes under the moniker Brackles, has a name that’s been spoken by more or less everyone with some kind of passing interest in dubstep over the last 2 or 3 months. Whether it’s been to pass comment on his mixes for FACT, Mary Anne Hobbs or Sinden or his jaw dropping DJing technique and highly stylized synthesized production, the general consensus has been positive to say the least.

With his own label, Blunted Robots (co-run by sometime production partner and friend Shortstuff), just springing into action with its first release, a split 12” between Mickey Pearce and his brother Martin Kemp, we caught up with him for a *quick chit chat.

Sonic Router: Can you give us a short history of how you got into making tunes?

Brackles: I never really set out to be a producer, I just downloaded a demo of fruity loops out of curiosity because that was what people at school were saying you needed to make tunes, so I thought I'd have a go.

It wasn't until I got Reason that I started to take it seriously.

What got you into dubstep?

I was buying garage from the Big Apple Website and bought all the early Big Apple release like Artwork and Benga coz they were garage records really… When I went to uni it was quite hard to keep up with (not being near London) but J da Flex's show on 1Xtra was really good for hearing new bits. I guess I properly got into it after hearing Paul Rose's Hotflush mix CD from 2005 which had Kode 9's ‘Sign of the Times’ on it. I used to play that to mates and they'd say I was listening to nightmare music!

Brackles – Get A Job [Applepips]

What do you enjoy more, producing or DJing?

DJing without a doubt… You're in a club, everyone is dancing and by the end of a set you know if you've done a good job. Sometimes I can sit and spend a few hours on the beats and then listen to what I've done and think "this is shit" and then not bother saving it. That's really depressing.

Where the fuck did you learn to mix like that?

Haha… I thought I was pretty good at mixing when I was at school but then I saw DJ EZ and I had to eat humble pie. I'd never even thought it was possible to beatmatch something in a couple seconds! It's all in the pitch fader - you shouldn't need to touch the record.

You've got a bit of a Notts connection going on, through University, and there’s a lot of music bubbling through from the NG postcodes of late. What is it about the area that seems to make it so prolific of late?

I think Geiom and Spamchop are responsible for a lot of it. Geiom brought me and Shortstuff through by releasing our first tunes and Spamchop running Wigflex and releasing all his crew like Hizatron and Metaphi really helps give Notts a bit of an identity. Anyone in Notts who is coming through now will definitely have been sending there stuff to one of those two and they'll always listen, give advice and let you know if they're feeling.

What else is coming up for you in the future?

My ‘Next Hype' Remix is gonna be dropping very soon and I've got another 12" on Planet Mu dropping in September with ‘Rawkus’ and ‘Air Pie’ on it. I've done a remix of MSTRKRFT and John Legend which is gonna be on the official release and me and Shortstuff are looking to put some more of our collabs out on Blunted Robots.

Oh and I'm doing a b2b set with Ramadanman at the Big Chill [Festival] which I'm well excited about!

PRE-ORDER: Mickey Pearce – Innami/Martin Kemp – No Charisma [Blunted Robots]

Blunted Robots is a brand new label run by two young upstarts, Brackles and Shortstuff. Whilst both enjoying success with their own releases, Brackles on Planet Mu and Applepips and Shortstuff on Ramp, they’ve combined their passion for future sounds and skwee melodies with a want to own and release records that overlap the fringes of funky, garage and dubstep; and this first release reflects this perfectly.

‘Innami’ is a rough and ready bashment style house track with broken riddims and full on vocals. It’s full of energy brought on by the freaked out bass pulses and deranged synth lines that twist into warped waves and bleeped out shapes. Mickey Pearce has here constructed a rudeboy hybrid of mutant funky and computer bashment that would undoubtedly make his Nan the proudest grandmother in all the land.

The flip ‘No Charisma’ by Martin Kemp has been making a lot of noise and getting plays from everyone from Cooly G to his sibling Brackles and beyond. It’s a futuristic take on funky with dub wise sensibilities; the broken beats skip and bump with a chunky, punchy precision whilst the synth lines shimmer and evolve from meek pads into sheets of pure Detroit dancefloors. The main hook is erratic, squalling round its pitches like a petulant bulldog with mad energy, but it’s the main combo of deep space bass and succulent percussion that makes it such an essential purchase.

INTERVIEW: Micky [nakedlunch]

The Naked Lunch label is rolling 3 releases strong as I write this, after putting out TRG’s ‘Generation EP,’ a split 12” betwixt Breakage and Instra:mental and a little more recently a 3 track single from American producer Jus Wan (full review here). With an exciting array of styles and approaches the Irish label is proving to be one for those in the know to keep eyes out for as they’re intent on using their 12”s to propel music thats a little left of centre into the lugholes of a very hungry audience.

It also helps that label boss Micky, is as much the exceptional DJ as he is the proverbial A&R man. Our earlier post on his May mix got us talking and now we’ve nailed it… a Sonic Router exclusive from one of the most interesting selectors to come through our world in a while.

Big Smiles.

Sonic Router: Can you provide those who may not know you with a bit of background info?

Micky: My names Micky, I live in deepest darkest Ireland. I just moved back here after 11 years living in Amsterdam & Rotterdam.

Outside of music who are you? What do you do on the daily?

I work as a debt collector… possibly the most frustrating job on earth due to the fact most of the people I deal with have plenty of cash but will complain and cry about having to pay a €200 bill while sitting inside of a 2009 6series BMW

How did you first get into DJing?

I really got into DJing when I moved to Amsterdam in 1996, a friend of mine managed the Fat Beats hip-hop store and he gave me a pair of sl1200's and a mixer. Then I started making mix tapes and giving them to some of the Dutch promoters... but they more or less told me that they only booked Dutch DJs. At the time I started working in Amsterdam with a guy called Andy Haze, he was an English DnB promoter who had just started a weekly night in a club called Mazzo and he made me resident.

From there I went on to promote a night called Redzone with Martyn and Nymfo and be involved with a night in Amsterdam called Ichione.

Do you have plans to produce yourself? If so what’s your production set up like? Has it changed a lot since day dot?

I have great plans but it never really works out so I gave up trying years ago… the way the music scene works it seems you do need to be a producer to get gigs…

What got you into dubstep?

I lost interest in DnB due to the fact for me it basically boils down to a few key producers and if your buying records or listening to music and your choice is restricted to about 6/8 artists it gets boring . I got into dubstep via buying vinyl… I buy a lot of different styles and dubstep was just the logical progression in my music tastes.

I think the turning point was when I went to see Kode 9 playing in Rotterdam in 2005. That sealed the deal.

You’re the first dubstep label to come out of Ireland right? Is there a big scene for dubstep in Ireland?

I think I was first by default... The label was up and running and I moved back here around the same time… there is another label based in Galway called Dub Culture.

There is a decent scene and you can and will see almost all the brand names. Some of the nights I have been to have been great but the scene seems to be centralised in Dublin. Everything in Ireland seems to centre around Dublin though (public transport, money, work, clubs etc)

Do you see yourself as sitting on the periphery of the scene? Geographically as well as in terms of the music you’re releasing…

Well I have no real choice about being on the periphery of the scene living where I do in Ireland, but I have always been an outsider when it comes to scenes, I tend to be more into the music and not the scene. As regards the label being on the periphery, I don't have aloof ideas of what it’s about or what it stands for; it is what it is really.

Obviously Instra:mental and Breakage are crossing some kind of invisible genre divide by making more 140bpm music. Did they need convincing or were you just tapping into the well of beats sitting on their hard drives?

I met Instra:mental via Martyn and kept up communication, they are real good guys and really into what they do and they wanted to help me out with the label so they gave me ‘Futurist’ and the rest is history, I’ll be eternally grateful to them as it turned out to be something very special to me.

Instra:mental - Futurist [Naked Lunch]

Do you think DnB producers bring something else to 140bpm music?

I suppose they bring their take on what dubstep should sound like, some get it right and turn out something pretty original and some of it just ‘sounds’ like a DnB producer making dubstep.

What else have you got coming up this year? More releases/gigs etc

I don't know about gigs, I have a few things lined up but like I said in dance music it seems you have to be a producer to get gigs, the age of the DJ died around 96... If anyone wants to book me drop me a line.

On the label front next up will be a 10" by Scuba which hopefully will be out soon. I’m just waiting on the artwork then it can be sent for mastering. Following that will be a 10"from a Detroit legend Sherard Ingram aka Urban Tribe/Stingray313/Drexciya, then something from Instra:mental and lots more stuff which will all be revealed in due time.

The forthcoming tracks can be heard on the myspace page

Tell us a little about the mix you have done for us, what tracks just had to be in there?

There is no concept behind the mix it’s just a selection of tunes I’m playing out when I do DJ. I play records a lot, it’s my way of relaxing and every now and then I smoke a joint and record what I’m doing; sometimes it turns out real good other times its shite.

I had to put the Omar-S tunes in there as they just turned up in the mail last week and I’m going through a real Omar-S phase now.

What is the thing that is most exciting you at the moment in the bass music scene?

How there seems to be a blurring between all the styles, it’s nice to hear DJ playing across the board and having people being into it and not turning their nose up at it - something that never happens in DnB… when you go to a DnB night you get only DnB - at least at some of the nights I go to…

Have you got anything else you want to tell us, words of wisdom for our readers?

Think hard about the reasons for starting a label. If your reason is to get DJ gigs or status then don’t bother. If your reason is to get music heard that you truly believe in regardless of who made it, then go ahead and work as hard as you can to get it realised.

The French wonder that is Fulgeance - anyone who caught his duel MPC antics at Thugs & Hugs a couple of months back will surely testify to the adjective I've just used - has his debut 12", 'Smartbanging', for the One Handed Music label dropping shortly.

A mixture of rolling Bladerunner synth themes, arpeggiated mid range bass lines, heavy fisted drums and the kind of clever light heartedness that really turns a hip hop 'showcase' into a relentless party, the EP holds a bunch of delightful gems including the show stealing wobble of 'Sour Socca.'

PRE-ORDER: Jack Sparrow – The Chase/Fullest [Tectonic]

Leeds producer and DJ, Jack Sparrow, has got a fair few releases under his belt for the likes of Senseless, Contagious and ‘Earwax labels but now, in July 2009, he is set to drop his first 12” for Tectonic. These two tracks are definitely more akin to the defined aesthetic of Tectonic material than Sparrow’s previous work; with that deep, techy spacious sound, the label is known for and does so well, proving very prominent across the release.

‘The Chase’ opens the 12” in deep dark style with rolling tribal drums and pummelling sub bass, with dubbed out samples chirping “Hard…core” adding to the layers of dark space. The drums and cleverly pressurised percussion really propel this one, much in the same way the overwhelming sense of dread that the shadowy sounds bring does. It’s an excellent example of dark dubstep given a constant kick drum technoid twist.

‘Fullest,’ which sees Sparrow joined by fellow Yorkshire producer Biggins, is a slightly more soulful affair with midnight soul stabs, cruising over that classic junglist sounding surge bass and skipping drum patterns that make perfect use of a singular conga hit. That trademark Tectonic hyper rolling, techno experimentation is omnipresent again, although Sparrow and Biggins fuse the drums with that deep mediation feel that makes you want to close your senses and simply drift along with the momentum of the track.

Don Rwina himself, Akkachar, the man who gave Starkey's 'A Mili' refix an airing on wax got in touch a while back proposing he weave together an episode of our ongoing exclusive mix series. I love shit like this. I knew nothing about this dude but now i'm hooked. Fusing subtle percussion with the kind of muffled kicks that soak my jean-shorts through, V.I.V.E.K. has officially made his entrance into my consciousness.

Judging by the title it looks like a mix put together for Nerm's BBC Asian Network show, Electro East, so its entirely his own productions. Mans is affiliated with Heny G and Silkie's Anti Social Entertainment clique and he's reportedly got a 12" forthcoming on Mala's Deep Medi Musik too.

INTERVIEW: Reecha [Dirty Canvas]

Ahead of Dirty Canvas' Room 3 takeover at fabric this Friday we went direct to the source with one of the night's promoters, armed with a laptop, a copy of Ga(y)rage Band and an industriously inquisitive look splashed on our mug.

What happened next needs no introduction... well, it actually does, else you might be confused, but you dig the sentiment, right? Enclosed here is an interview and a completely live mix teased out in one take by Reecha.

Sonic Router: Can you provide those who may not know you with a bit of background info?

Reccha: My name is Reecha. I co-run a night called Dirty Canvas and a label called No Hats No Hoods. We've just released our 7th record which is Tempa T's Next Hype - which has remixes by Brackles and Starkey amongst others.

Outside of music who are you? What do you do on the daily?

I am me and I make Ps

People say you’re the Asian George Clooney… Why pick the Reecha moniker when Asian George has an equally impressive ring to it?

I think that would be disrespectful to the rest of my heritage - as I am nearly as Welsh as I am Asian. However I am planning a folk gabba side project underneath the Asian George appellation. Reecha is the only nickname I had at school, whereas my likeness to the sometime Nespresso spokesman is something that occurred in later life.

What’s your involvement with Dirty Canvas?

Check question one, fool.

What can we expect from the fabric takeover?

I hope the same you can expect from any Dirty Canvas night. For me the biggest challenge is the find the balance between throwing a good party and being progressive musically. Although we have originally been more associated with grime, I like to think that our real base is garage - its all its forms and offspring - whether that's grime, funky or dubstep etc. I guess on the night that's pretty well represented by what both Brackles and Mumdance do - who both come from completely different places but manage to be great club DJs while still satisfying those who want to stand in the corner and scratch their beards (note I have a beard and have nothing against them). That for me is the most exciting thing about music right now - well the exciting thing about underground UK dance music at least - people seem to be becoming more open and being less obsessed with labels.

I think Alex Nut is a great example of that too - I pretty much listen to his Rinse show religiously and he's one of those few people who you really do trust to just bring quality whatever he's dipping into and Silkie is making really great music at the moment so I feel particularly proud of the line up.

In short, it will be amazing.

Tell us a little about the mix you’ve made for us…

Its crap.

Probably could have been tighter but there you go - its just some music I like at the moment. Its got some new stuff, but also some pretty old tunes - but I personally find it quite interesting to 'recontextualise' (i.e. pitch up +8 ) a record by placing it with something it wasn't intended to relate to. Its got on the new Martin Kemp remix he's just done for us [No Hats No Hoods] which I don't think anyone would have heard - its not intended to fully represent what Friday will be like but its just a glimpse of what I might play at least.

Can we expect any original Reecha productions at any point soon?

I used to make some fairly generic UK hip hop - but I stopped drinking tea and lost my backpack. I also wrote about 4 hours worth of punk songs about girls not liking me whenIi was in my teens so it would only be right for me to attempt to subject the world to more. I gotta sort out some shit then I'm gonna get back at it - aided by some people who are infinitely more talented than me.

You got any wisdom for the interweb you’d care to share?

You look uncannily like Gary Lucy.

INTERVIEW: The Hizatron [Wigflex]

Sometimes a producer’s style forces your hand. Either you put the chips in, raise the stakes and bluff your way through the first few listens. You might win, you might not, but it’s the hollow void of the loss that always sucks the life right out of you. And let’s face it, its nicer to make a concerted effort and be rewarded with a healthy return… monetary or otherwise.

After taking such an informed punt on the two hectic slices of contorted synthesized mania this man has released so far on Nottingham based label, Wigflex, we nabbed the one they call The Hizatron, asking him to lay down his style to virtual tape for us, learning us a whole heap about his processes and passions as he did so.

Sonic Router: Can you provide those who may not know you with a bit of background info?

The Hizatron: I am partially robotic, and powered by Hungarian potato juice and yams. I also make beats out of cats and four eggs. I was assembled in Notts and am operated by the evil Wigflex Corporation.

Outside of music who are you? What do you do on the daily?

I’ve just completed my degree, so my days have mostly consisted of afternoon breakfast, not going to Uni, and then mongin’ out in front of the mac. I’m resident at Wigflex and I’m 23.

How did you first get into making music? What was it that infected you to do produce?

My little brother is a rapper and uses a community studio in St. Anns in Notts, he told me about all the stuff you could play with down there like the Akai MPC 2000 and I thought it sounded japes so went along, I was 16. The MPC was my weapon of choice and I used to make what liked to think was RZA-esque hip-hop beats and give them to local MCs to spit on. I got tired of thinking I had to rely on other people to finish tunes though and wanted to get away from sampling everything and get into synths and whatnot. I quit my A-levels and started a music tech course and that’s where I learnt recording and Logic Pro.

Now I make rudeboy techno.

What’s the big idea behind The Hizatron moniker?

My actual name is Joshua Harvey, my boys used to call me “Jay to the hizzay” for some reason, which they shortened to “j-hiz”, or “hiz” or “HZA”. When I was 17 and had first started going raving I met Spamchop at those boys house at an after party, I showed him some beats, he was bang on ‘em and asked if I had an alias, I said not really, except hizatron. He added the “The”.

We have a mutual respect for robots, and it went from there. He’s been my top boy ever since.

What’s your production set up like? Has it changed a lot since day dot?

Yeah nowadays I just I’ve got a box with some lights on it full of cats, four eggs, a mac, Logic, Ableton, my monitors, a Roland Groovebox and a Korg thing that I hardly ever use. I like recording clicky and gloopy audio samples for a lot of my percussion. I use bare automation, processing and effects; I also like Soundhack, FM8, ESP and Ultrabeat amongst other things.

Your own productions, for me anyway, lie more on the minimal side of music. Would you say that it’s a fair comment to say you’re more influenced by techno producers rather than dubstep??

Yes definitely, I flirted with dubstep when it first reared its head, but I didn’t ever enjoy producing it enough, probably because I was shit at it! I like clever techno, mans like Stefan Bodzin, James Holden, Extrawelt, Minilogue, Trentemoller. Also fun, swingy tunes like the stuff Trapez and Leftroom/Letfout put out, they’re a couple of my favorite labels. Wigflex has an element of dubstep obviously, but we don’t want to be pigeon-holed. Our recent headliners have included Nathan Fake and Luke Abbott. Taylor is producing some of the cleverest techno in the country.

What was it that sucked you in [to the music you make]?

I was heavily influenced by Spamchop when we hooked up, he’s literally the dopest man out, he’s actually physically addicted to vinyl. Also Taylor, he showed me ridiculous levels of tek haus and is an absolute genius. I showed him how to use Logic about 3 years ago and he instantly took it to space, now everything I do is to try and impress him really.

What’s your involvement with the Wigflex camp? How did it all begin?

Well not long after I met Spamchop he made this mixtape, it was called Wigflex 2000, just coz he had a bit of a bush nut wig piece. Spam used to have a residency at a bar in Notts and used to call it Wigflex Wednesdays. He also used to have a show on Kindafunkyradio, they had a birthday celebration and asked him to host a room, Spam asked me if I could play a set. We got Taylor on board and called it the Wigflex room. That December we put on the first Wigflexmas and the venue asked us to make it a regular night.

Now were at Stealth which is the dopest place about, Funktion 1, ream, got our own label and clothing line! It’s big nowadays.

Nottingham seems to be on fire at the moment, musically, leaning a lot of the twisted synth side of things. What is it about the community that produces this music do you think?

I don’t know, y’know, there’s good access to free studios and that helps people to get into producing young. Everyone’s a bit rude, even if you’re not, you’re considered a rudeboy elsewhere and we’re the garage generation, and at the end of the day. It’s all garage really isn’t it?

Is Nottingham, in your opinion, a healthy place for dubstep and for music in general?

Yeah its healthy, it’s not a massive place so there’s not a huge choice of venues but there’s a lot of talent and a lot of dope residents. I’m not a massive dubstepper, but we have seen some big things frequently pass through, Appleblim and Brackles are often in town. Max Cooper has been a Firefly hero for years; Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom is Notts, Spamchop obviously. Don’t forget Geiom, he’s sick and bringing a lot of man through on the productions front as well. I don’t think anyone had heard anything like Geiom and Spamchop’s ‘Mah Geile Zwazo’ before. The Futureproof crew are super dope too. It’s comin’ out our ears man.

The mix you’ve done for us is comprised entirely of your productions… Can you tell us a little bit about your track selection, was it just a case of fitting things together or did you have a specific set of tunes waiting to go?

I wanted to include the releases in there but a lot of it is stuff I’ve been messing around with recently, and some Ableton tomfoolery. I like to think my stuff is quite electro-acoustic, as in I like to build intensities through concentrating on colour, timbres and textures rather than notation. Although I do produce some stuff with more chord progression and whatnot.

What else have you got coming up this year?

Well the second Wigflex EP has just come out and is triple dope, so get that! Also got a next tune called ‘Von Glooperstein’ coming out on Geiom’s label, Berkane Sol, which is sick. Him, Brackles and the Applepips crew are bringing club wrecking reports already. In terms of upcoming headliners we’ve got Shackleton live in August, and we’re in talks with some very big artists. The new clothing line is released this month – Wigflex City Monsters, the printers are goin’ on like right pirates though so Spam’s gona be swashbuckling mans pronto, anyway look out for that and high quality mixes and live sets from the whole crew on wigflex.com! Other than that were doing some remixes and I’ve got a few tracks in mind for a solo EP.

I might buy some more hi-tops.

Have you got any words of wisdom you’d like to instill on the interweb?

Buy lots of pairs of triple dope creps, then wear them on rotation. That way you’ll have loads of sick boogs that stay fresh for time!
