READ: SRQ017: Braiden

The 17th edition of the Sonic Router column of theQuietus focuses on Rinse FM DJ, Braiden. With his debut release, 'The Alps,' now sold out release on Joy Orbison's Doldrums imprint and a steadily building reputation as a selector we treated him to lunch on a snowy afternoon last December and sat eating quietly as he monologued...

"UK music is so based on rhythm, you know what I mean? You look at a lot of drum and bass, UK funky, dubstep etc and a lot of those genres would look down on 4x4 music because it's one rhythm – which is totally missing the trick – but, they would say that. And a lot of it is rhythmically focused but it doesn't have any atmosphere to it, or doesn't really experiment with the emotive qualities of the music. You get that a lot more in techno - I think sometimes you get that too much in techno - but it's very much about the atmosphere and the sounds made, but they don't do anything interesting rhythmically. That's what I'm trying to bring together: something that is emotive, in an interesting headspace that does a lot for the mind but is also rhythmically interesting." - Braiden

READ: SRQ016: Distal [Embassy Recordings]

This month the Sonic Router column on theQuietus profiles Atlantan producer, promoter and Embassy Recordings label boss, Distal. A long time conspirator of ours, his tireless enthusiasm, astonishing commitment to pushing bass heavy sounds in his native territory and his frankly incredible hit rate when it comes to fresh music makes him one our super friends - a hallowed honour bestowed on but a few.

"I remember growing up in Atlanta where liking electronic music was kind of a rebellious movement from the norm. Atlanta has been 100% rap and hip hop since as far back as I can remember; there's never been room for techno!" Distal recalls coyly. "It's a double-edged sword really. On one side, the masses and popular musicians in America are finally into dance music and dubstep in particular, but at what cost?" - Oli Marlow

READ: SRQ014: Joe [Hessle Audio]

The latest edition of the Sonic Router opinion column on theQuietus focuses on Joe who has to date released music on Hessle Audio and Apple Pips...

First releasing 'Grimelight' b/w 'Rut' on the closely watched Hessle Audio in April of last year, the unknown Joe - and his efficient command of stylistically brutal percussion, minimal arrangements, thick sub bass and subtle strokes of melody – has taken over a year to provide a follow up. In the last six weeks or so, though, he has hit out with a quickly succeeded duo of platters: an untitled piece backed with 'Digest' for Appleblim's Bristol based Apple Pips label and his DJ tool-come-party-starter 'Claptrap' b/w 'Level Crossing' for Hessle. Thankfully each piece he's released has been worth the prolonged silence, jumping out from the off with stuttering drum lines and or a sense of groove that's now recognisably his: a playful yet mature exploration of unadulterated percussion and minimal sound colouration. - Oli Marlow

READ: SRQ013: Sonar 2010 Review

The lovable rogues at theQuietus sent me to Spain on a mission to enjoy Barcelona's optimum 'International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art,' Sonar 2010 last week. Here's what came out of my withdrawl laden, fuzzed out brain and bandaged fingers earlier this week...

"The whole vibe of the city during Sonar is infectious; reams of bars, tapas spots and pavement corners are coated in music lovers, the glorious weather soaks everything in a sheen that simply feels 100% significant and isolated to this 4 or 5 day period; and bar the lime green lanyards sported by the festival goers milling around Barcelona’s awkward, thin streets it’s not obvious that everyone is there for simply for the music. In fact a lot might not be there for the festival, but for a bunch of the numerous off Sonar parties that pepper nightclubs, hotel roofs and secluded beaches around the same time as the festival – a glorious subculture that often holds more than the festival can accommodate."

SRQ012 focuses its attention on the work of Lithuanian producer Jokubas Dargis aka Eleven Tigers - ahead of the release of his astounding Clouds Are Mountains album on the Soul Motive label - concentrating on his strong bond with technology, a deep love of Talk Talk and his improvisational techniques.

His Sonic Router mix is also strangely bewitching.

READ: SRQ011 - Boss Kite

After listening to a lot of the margins music commonly referred to as 'skweee,' of late I'd been mulling over the best writing options afforded to me in my quest to document a style of music I was becoming more and more besotted with. Not knowing much of the gentry or history behind the movement itself - hailing from Scandinavia, the primitive sound has really blossomed over the last few years - but sharing a common love of the sound I approached Brighton based producer Boss Kite, hoping to harness his passion for the genre and his productions as the source of a further investigation.

Catch him in the chat and the mix over at The Quietus.
