Scuba’s Hotflush imprint has taken dubstep away from the standard wob wob/half time drum template, infecting it with everything from techno to minimal and beyond and in doing so they’ve created a signature kind of melancholy that works as well in headphones as it does on a suped up rig.
The Berlin based label’s latest signing, Mount Kimbie, further this sound exploration with their atmospheric adventures. Whether its taking the mood ridden guitars of Canadian emcee Soso and ripening their textured skin with pitched up vocals and stuttering percussion on title track ‘Maybes’ or making their melodies sound like drips caught in a sewer on the aptly named ‘Taps’ this duo are taking dubstep away from the dancefloor and marrying it with elements of drone and minimal beat programming too astoundingly listenable effect.
Rob Booth’s excellent Electronic Explorations show featured two mixes from Mount Kimbie a few weeks back. Both members put one together and both of them contain original music from the production duo.
